Water Environment Federation annual event reaches Gold Level for environmental and social responsibility

WASHINGTON, D.C. (25 January 2024) – The Events Industry Council announced today that WEFTEC, an annual event hosted by the Water Environment Federation (WEF), has achieved Gold Level Certification to EIC’s Sustainable Event Standards.

The EIC Sustainable Event Standards are specific standards for environmental and social responsibility within the events industry. Created by the EIC Sustainability and Social Impact Committee in partnership with industry professionals and leading sustainability practitioners, the requirements provide event planners and suppliers with prescriptive actions for producing and delivering sustainable events.

We are proud to be the first water-sector event to achieve Gold Certification,” said WEF Managing Director of Event Strategy Stephanie Jones. “Our efforts to earn this certification align with both our members’ focus on sustainable water solutions and WEF’s mission to inspire the water community in pursuit of human and environmental well-being. EIC’s Sustainable Event Standards outlined a roadmap for reducing WEFTEC’s environmental impact and providing even more positive contributions to the communities where we host this event.

EIC Chief Executive Officer Amy Calvert congratulated WEFTEC on its Gold Level certification. “WEFTEC and the WEF team have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the environmentally and socially responsible practices that are needed to support long-term sustainability in our industry,” Calvert said. “We hope to see many more events following their lead.”

The standard specifies performance criteria in the areas of organisational management, marketing, communications and engagement, climate action, water management, materials and circularity, supply chain management, diversity, equity and inclusion, accessibility and social impact.

The Alliance for Audited Media, a not-for-profit auditing organisation, performed the independent third-party certification of WEFTEC’s compliance with the Event Organiser standard.

"The independent certification process is a rigorous review of the company’s compliance to the EIC Standards. We applaud the Water Environment Federation team on this achievement,” said Alliance for Audited Media President Richard Murphy.
