The venue achieves SILVER Level Certification for environmental and social responsibility

WASHINGTON, D.C. (04 May 2026) – The Events Industry Council is pleased to announce that the Whistler Conference Centre, an event venue managed by Tourism Whistler, has achieved SILVER level certification to the EIC Sustainable Event Standards. This is the first EIC certification for the centre.

“Achieving this certification is a meaningful acknowledgement of our team’s dedication to making Whistler a premier sustainable meetings destination and the Whistler Conference Centre a venue of choice for planners,” says Preston Miller, Director of Conference Sales & Services at Tourism Whistler. “It reflects our commitment to environmental and socially responsible practices that support the long-term sustainability of the tourism and events industry and marks an important milestone in Whistler’s sustainability journey.”

The EIC Sustainable Event Standards were created through a global collaborative process with participation from subject matter experts in all sectors. They provide a framework for collaboration and a strong focus on guidance and metrics so that event professionals at all stages of their sustainability journey have the support needed to implement and measure sustainable practices.

The standards specify performance criteria in the areas of organizational management; marketing; communications and engagement; climate action; water management; materials and circularity; supply chain management; diversity, equity and inclusion; accessibility; and social impact. To date, more than 300 professionals have participated in the review of the standards. The venue standard is one of several comprehensive standards for environmentally sustainable events.

Located in the heart of Whistler Village, the Whistler Conference Centre is Whistler’s signature conference facility, offering more than 40,000 square feet of versatile meeting space to accommodate conferences and events of varying sizes and scope. Tourism Whistler has long prioritised environmental and social responsibility within its conference sales and services strategy, supporting planners with resources such as a comprehensive Green Meetings Guide, a robust environmental policy, and opportunities for delegates to participate in community volunteer and donation programs.

Whistler is recognised as a leader in environmental practices and was Canada’s first destination to achieve four APEX/ASTM certifications: Conference Centre, F&B Supplier, A/V Supplier, and CVB/Destination. This latest achievement builds on that foundation and further demonstrates the Whistler Conference Centre’s commitment to advancing standards-based sustainability within the meetings and events industry.

“This certification recognises the Whistler Conference Centre’s strong commitment to sustainability and measurable progress,” said Amy Calvert, President and CEO of the Events Industry Council. “This achievement highlights how venues can embed responsible practices into operations while delivering meaningful impact for their communities and stakeholders.”

The Alliance for Audited Media, a not-for-profit auditing organisation, performed the independent third-party certification of the centre’s compliance with the venue standard.

“By becoming EIC-certified, Whistler Conference Centre is demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability in sustainability practices,” said Richard Murphy, CEO, President and Managing Director of the Alliance for Audited Media. “We congratulate their team on this achievement and their continued efforts to prioritise sustainability across their operations.”
